Obituary

Constance "Connie" Apel, 88, of Shenango Presbyterian SeniorCare, New Wilmington, passed away the evening of Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2015, at her residence. Connie was born April 20, 1927, in Pittsburgh, to the late George A. and Mary Ellen (Egan) Caye. After graduating in 1945 from St. Mary's High School in Pittsburgh, she attended cosmetology school. Prior to her marriage, Connie was employed as a secretary for Warner Bros., and a hairdresser for Boggs and Buhl Department Store, both in Pittsburgh. Her husband, Joseph Robert "Bob" Apel, who she married Nov. 22, 1956, in Epiphany Church, Pittsburgh, passed away July 10, 2013. Connie was employed for many happy years at St. Aloysius School in East Liverpool, Ohio, where she volunteered a lot of her time and managed the twice weekly bingo. Following her retirement, she continued serving her community at Meals for the Needy at St. Ann's Parish in East Liverpool. Connie was a member of St. Aloysius Church and its Altar and Rosary Society, and also St. Ann's Church, both in East Liverpool. She moved to her current home in 2012 and was affiliated with Mary, Mother of Hope Parish in New Castle. In recent years, she enjoyed the many activities and trips that were sponsored by the Shenango Presbyterian SeniorCare with her husband and daughter. Surviving are her daughter, Colleen Wilver and her husband, Bill, of New Castle; her grandson, who was her pride and joy, 1st Lt. Patrick J. Wilver of Fort Stewart, Ga., and his fiancée, C/Capt. Eve Sampson, of West Point, N.Y.; her sister, Patricia Andrews of New Castle; her brother, William F. Caye and his wife, Eva, of Pittsburgh; and many beloved nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husband, Connie was preceded in death by her daughter, Maureen Apel; her sister, Mary Catherine Petri; and her stepfather, Charles Sheehan. Connie's family would like to thank the staff at Shenango Presbyterian SeniorCare, who were like family and rendered such quality care to Connie and her husband, Bob. Private services will be held in the J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory Inc., 111 W. Falls St., New Castle. A Committal service will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Pittsburgh. Memorial contributions may be made to Shenango Presbyterian SeniorCare, 238 S. Market St., New Wilmington, Pa. 16142.
