Obituary

Chester "Chet" Milton Burger, Sr., of Hermitage, passed away at 5:45 a.m. Sunday, November 6, 2016, in the Butler VA Hospital, after an extended illness. He was 92.

Mr. Burger was born December 10, 1923, in Farrell, a son of Martin and Sadie (Lewis) Burger.

He was a 1941 graduate of Farrell High School where he was a standout wrestler.

A decorated war veteran, Chet served as a Sergeant with the U.S. Army in the 85th Infantry Division in Italy and Africa during WW II.

He was a Prisoner of War (POW) for a year in a German camp and the recipient of two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star. Chet was an honoree at the Mercer Memorial Day 500 this past Memorial Day.

He was employed as a warehouse manager at Myer Frank Furniture for more than 40 years and later owned and operated Burger's Baby Furniture in Hermitage for ten years.

Chet was a life member of Wheatland-Farrell United Methodist Church.

He was also a member of the VFW, Post 5286, and the Lions Club, both Farrell; and the Disabled American Veterans (DAV), Chapter 55. He was a Free and Accepted Mason for 50 years and a member of the Kedron Lodge 389, West Middlesex.

Chet enjoyed fishing, card playing and spending time with his grandchildren and close friends.

His wife, the former Rose Bronich, whom he married November 2, 1946, passed away August 19, 1992.

He is survived by two daughters, Bonnie Stright, Pittsburgh; and Darlene Taylor and her husband John, Hermitage; a son, Chester "Chet" Milton Burger, Jr. and his wife Christine, also Hermitage; four grandsons, Alex and Andrew Burger; Dr. Matthew Taylor and his wife Katie; and Justin Stright; and two great granddaughters, Kendall Stright and Brooklyn Taylor.

Besides his wife, Chet was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers, Martin, Ward, George, Donald, Emmett and Herbert Burger; and a sister, Sara Quarterson.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, November 10, 2016, in J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 1090 E. State St., Sharon.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday, November 11, 2016, in the funeral home, with the Rev. C. Charles Eckles, pastor of IHS Ministries, Hermitage, officiating.

Interment: America's Cemetery, Hermitage, with military honors.
