Obituary

On April 28, 2016, Charlotte Marie (Frederick) Lally of Sewickly and who was formerly of Hermitage, was called by her Lord to come home.

She born on February 25, 1921 to Rose (Weiss) and Alex Szilagy in Ambridge, PA; her father died two weeks after her birth. Her childhood was spent in the Beaver County region. As a youngster, she enjoyed the roaring 1920s as her parents owned and operated two grocery stores, one in Monaca and the second in Beaver Falls, PA. At the age of eight and through her teen years, Charlotte experienced first hand the depths of the Great Depression. It was during those years that she set her sights on becoming a nurse.

After graduating from Rochester High School in 1938, Charlotte enrolled in the Allegheny General Hospital School of Nursing where she graduated in 1942. In August 1943, she enlisted in the U.S. Army and was assigned to the 280th Station Hospital serving in the European Theatre in England, France, and Germany. She was released in February 1946. During her two and one-half years of service, Charlotte was the recipient of three medals from the U.S. Army including the Bronze Star for her hospital work regarding the sinking of the SS Leopoldville off the coast of Cherbourg, France, on Christmas Eve 1944, the World War II Victory Medal, and the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal. She remained friends with her "army nurses" her entire life.

After the War, she worked as a registered nurse at the Veterans Hospital in Aspinwall, PA where she met the love of her life, Dr. Francis L. Lally. They married in February 1948 and had a family of eight including the Honorable Maureen E. Lally-Green (Ross Green), Dr. Francis Lally (Kriss), Dr. Michael E. Lally (Julie), Dr. Patrick T. Lally (Valerie), Mr. John M Lally, CPA (Kiera), Dr. Carol Lally Shields (Jerry Shields), Dr. Margaret Lally (John Marous), and Mr. Robert J. Lally, CPA (Amy). All reside in the Pittsburgh-area except for Carol who resides in Philadelphia, PA. Charlotte was blessed with 33 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild Aidan Lally.

She was a founding member of the Church of Notre Dame, Hermitage, PA. She served as Past President of the Medical Auxiliary of Mercer County PA, Past President of John XXIII Retirement Home Auxiliary in Sharon PA, and helped with the Soup Kitchen at the Prince of Peace Center in Farrell PA.

Her favorite pastime was playing bridge with friends. She loved the swing music of the Big Band Era, Frank Sinatra and dancing. Along with her husband, she lived in the "Sharon area" for over 50 years and relocated to the Sewickley area to be near many of her children after the passing of her husband.

In addition to her biological father, she was predeceased by her mother Rose, her adoptive father, Robert Frederick, two siblings Alex Frederick and Ella Frederick Sirjord, and her husband Dr. Francis L. Lally.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation be made in her honor to: The Francis L. and Charlotte M. Lally Memorial Scholarship Fund at St. Vincent College, 300 Fraser Purchase Road, Latrobe, PA 15650, Attention: Fr. Paul Taylor. Saint Vincent College was a place she loved. It was the alma mater of her husband and of two of her sons, Frank and John. She and her husband were married at the Saint Vincent Basilica in 1948.

Charlotte lived a long, healthy, and fulfilling life. She was instrumental in every aspect of her family's life, from tending to school work and chores at home to entertaining friends, priests, and Sisters in local communities. To her children, she stressed purpose, accomplishment of one's goals, and kind treatment of everyone, all within the context of a deep Catholic faith. Though she will be missed by her family, she looked forward to reuniting with her husband, Francis, and their many relatives and friends who went before her. In her last few days, she heard from many of her grandchildren and, on her last great day, she was surrounded by family.
