Charlotte S. Kirkwood, formerly of Portersville, passed away peacefully at 6:15 a.m., Monday, Jan. 19, 2015, in Golden Hill Nursing Home following an extended illness with Alzheimer's. She was 77. Mrs. Kirkwood was born Dec. 16, 1937, in New Castle, the daughter of Jan and Mary Frances Miksza Siergiej. She was a 1955 graduate of New Castle High School. She had been employed as an office manager for Dr. Roland Nord and Dr. James Bower for 28 years. Charlotte was a member of the former SS. Phillip and James Church, now St. Vincent de Paul Parish. She liked camping, boating, gardening, antiquing and crafts. She was an avid reader and enjoyed football, particularly the Pittsburgh Steelers. She was an animal enthusiast, and she especially loved dogs. She was a great supporter of the ASPCA and the Wounded Warrior Project. She married Jack L. Kirkwood on June 2, 1956. He passed away March 25, 2013, in Florida. Charlotte's greatest love was for her family, children and grandchildren. She is survived by one daughter, Lori Proch and her husband, Ronne, of Chagrin Falls, Ohio; two sons, Jack D. Kirkwood and his wife, Emily, of Portersville and David A. Kirkwood and his wife, Betty, of Cabot, Pa.; two sisters, Nancy Gentile and her husband, Richard, of New Castle and Lucille McKissick of Slippery Rock; six grandchildren, Megan Kirkwood Dado, Chelsea Kirkwood, Ronne Proch, Courtney Smith, Bethany Proch and Jacob Smith; and one great-granddaughter, Clare Charlotte Dado. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Janet Morell. Calling hours will be 5 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21, in the J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory, 111 W. Falls St. Funeral services will be conducted at 6 p.m. in the funeral home with the Rev. Michael R. Ackerman, parochial vicar, officiating. The family will host a funeral meal at Medure's Catering, 2500 Butler Road, immediately following the service for family and friends.
