Obituary

Dr. Charles "Doc" H. Zeigler, 80, of Hermitage, passed away peacefully June 18, 2025, under the care of Passavant Community in Zelienople.

Charlie was born November 11, 1944, in Ellwood City, PA, son of Harry Francis and Margaret "Peg" (Young) Zeigler. He was a 1962 graduate of Lincoln High School, 1966 graduate of Geneva College, Beaver Falls, and 1970 graduate of Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine, Kirksville, MO. He was a Fellow in the American College of Forensic Examiners. In addition, he received a Master of Public Health from the University of Wisconsin in 1995.

While Charlie was an intern at Shenango Valley Osteopathic Hospital, Farrell, he was drafted into the US Army and honorably served two years as a physician.

Charlie spent his career serving the Shenango Valley as a physician, initially in family practice, then over 20 years as an Emergency Room physician at now UPMC Horizon, Farrell, pioneering the first 24-hour emergency room coverage in the area. He transitioned to Occupational Medicine, retiring from Apple Mobile Medical in 2014. His roles and responsibilities over the years were expansive, including physician for the Mercer County Jail, head of the inpatient drug and alcohol unit, Chief of Staff for Shenango Valley Medical Center, Medical Director for the former Gold Cross/Rural Metro Ambulance and McGonigle Ambulance, and Chief Deputy Coroner for Mercer County. He received two commendations throughout the years for his service over self.

Charlie was a member of the Church of Notre Dame, Hermitage, and St. Gregory Church of Divine Grace Parish, Zelienople.

Besides his family, Charlie's other love was service to his community. Doc was a life member of the Hermitage Volunteer Fire Department, serving over 50 years in roles such as Treasurer and Medical Director. Doc gave freely of his time providing physicals for many sports and community organizations over the years while spending many afternoons and evenings as the sideline physician for the Kennedy Catholic football program. He served on boards of the American Heart Association, Family Planning, Mercer County Republican Party, and Selective Service.

Charlie's deep commitment to helping others led him, along with his best friend Jim Perry, to establish the Shenango Valley Children's Transplant Fund. Over the years, they dedicated themselves to offering financial assistance to families with children in need of pediatric transplants. Beyond monetary support, Charlie, Jim, Peggy, and Ruth played a vital role in supporting these families emotionally and practically - organizing fundraisers, hosting picnics, and providing critical help during incredibly challenging times.

Possibly his greatest accomplishment was a hole-in-one at Oak Tree Country Club, where he spent many years enjoying his favorite pastime.

He was a member of the Kirksville Masonic Lodge No. 105.

Charlie married the light of his life, Margaret "Peggy" Bennett, on June 20, 1970, and enjoyed 55 happy and devoted years of marriage.

Charlie is survived by his wife, Peggy, son Christopher Zeigler (Amanda) of Hermitage, PA; a daughter Amy Behun (Kevin), Harmony, PA; a sister, Katherine "Kitti" Taylor (Gordon Blount) of Harrisburg, PA; a brother James Zeigler (Marlene) of Mechanicsville, VA; seven grandchildren Rick, Maggie, Ryan, Mara, Ella, Claire, and Michael; a great-grandson, Malaki; and two nieces.

In addition to his parents, Charlie was preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Josephine Bennett; and his dear friend, Jim Perry.
