The Reverend Charles D. Skinner, 89, died at 9:40 a.m. Wednesday, September 16, 2015, in St. John XXIII Home, Hermitage. Father Skinner was born December 26, 1925, in New Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, a son of Jared and Alberta (Akins) Skinner. After attendingNew Bethlehem public schools, he attended St. Vincent College in Latrobe where he received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees while in formation for the priesthood. He later also earned a Master's degree in history at the University of Pittsburgh and did doctoral work at Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio. His education was interrupted when he was drafted into the army in 1942. He served in the Pacific Theater until 1945 and was discharged from the Army in 1946. Fr. Skinner was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Erie on May 14, 1953, in St. Peter Cathedral by Bishop Edward McManaman. Father Skinner began his priestly ministry as parochial vicar at St. Mark Parish in Emporium, but was appointed to teach at Cathedral Preparatory School in Erie just 3 months later. He served at the school for fifteen years, including many years as Assistant Headmaster, when, in 1968 he was appointed pastor of St. Teresa Parish in Union City, where he served until 1975. Fr. Skinner was then appointed pastor of St. Stephen Parish in Oil City where he served the people there until his retirement in 1993. He spent his first year of retirement at the Church of the Sacred Heart, Sharon, and in 1994 moved to St. John XXIII Home in Hermitage where he served the parishoners of St. Anthony's Church, Sharon, and St. Adalberts Church in Farrell as a weekend assistant. Fr. Skinner is survived by: a brother, Jerry Skinner and his wife Val, New Bethlehem, PA; three sisters, Gladys Travis, Slippery Rock, PA; Mary Belle Bordone, Virginia Beach, VA; and Lorraine Allori and her husband Nello, Newark, OH; and many loving nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday, September 20, 2015, in St. John XXIII Home, 2250 Shenango Valley Freeway, Hermitage. A Vigil Service will be held at 8:15 p.m. in the home. Additional calling hours will be from 10 a.m. until the time of Mass on Monday, September 21, 2015, in St. Anthony's Church, 804 Idaho Street, Sharon. Funeral Mass will be 11a.m. in St. Anthony's Church, with Bishop Emeritus Donald W. Trautman, as celebrant. Interment: St. Charles Cemetery, New Bethlehem, PA.
