Obituary

Funeral service is Thursday for Charles W. "Bill" "Doc" Finzel of Sharon, who passed away peacefully at 11:59 p.m. Saturday, March 7, 2015, in his home, surrounded by his family. He was 90. Mr. Finzel was born March 25, 1924, in Sharon, a son of George and Ellen Shaffer Finzel. He was a lifelong area resident and a graduate of Sharon High School. Bill retired in 1984 as a supervisor from the former General American Transportation Corp., Masury, where he was employed for 34 years. He was a member of Hickory United Methodist Church, Hermitage. A Free and Accepted Mason for more than 50 years, he belonged to the former Sharon Lodge 250 and was currently a member of Kedron Lodge 389, West Middlesex. He was also a 32nd degree member of the Scottish Rite Cathedral, New Castle. Bill was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels at Christ Lutheran Church, Sharon, for 15 years. Years earlier, he was very active in area bowling leagues and was a past assistant scoutmaster for Troop 3, Sharon. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and golf and loved spending time with his family. His wife of 59 years, the former Lois Virginia Hanson, whom he married June 20, 1953, passed away July 2, 2012. Surviving are two sons, Robert Finzel and his wife Cindy, Warren, Pa.; and Gary Finzel and his wife Nancy, Sharon; four grandchildren, Kristen Lewis and her husband Mike, Uniontown, Ohio; Erica Finzel and her husband Jeremy Baxter, Akron, Ohio; Jamie Finzel, Franklin; and Andy Finzel, Sharon; a great-grandson, Brayden Baxter, Akron; and two sisters, Norma Steklachick and her husband Ed, Hermitage; and Clara Young, Sharpsville. Besides his wife, Bill was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, George and Harold Finzel. The family suggests memorial contributions may be made to either Hickory United Methodist Church, 240 N. Hermitage Road, Hermitage, PA 16148; Buhl Farm, 715 Hazen Road, Hermitage, PA 16148; Meals on Wheels, 396 Buhl Boulevard, Sharon, PA 16146; or Hospice of the Valley, 5190 Market Street, Youngstown, OH 44512. The family would like to thank all of the people who assisted with Charles' care during the past year. Calling hours: 1 to 3 and 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday (3-11-15) in J. BRADLEY McGONIGLE FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATORY Inc., 1090 E. State St., Sharon. Services: Masonic service at 3 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home by Kedron Lodge 389. Funeral service at 11 a.m. Thursday (3-12-15) in Hickory United Methodist Church, Hermitage, with the Rev. David S. Evans, pastor, officiating. Everyone is asked to go directly to the church. Interment: Morefield Cemetery, Hermitage.
