Charles J. 'Chuck' Chavka, of Hermitage, passed away peacefully at 6:06 p.m. on Friday (12-3-10) at John XXIII Home, Hermitage. He was 87.
Chuck was born on October 5, 1923, in Farrell, PA., the son of Peter and Anna Vasic Chavka.
A lifelong area resident, he graduated from Farrell High School in 1941.
He retired as a Millwright in 1983 from the former Sharon Steel Corporation's Farrell plant after 42 years of service. Most recently, he worked as a bank currier for First National Bank of Hermitage from 1990 until June 2010.
Chuck was an active member of the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, Hermitage, and the former St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Farrell, PA., where he was involved in many church activities and offices.
Chuck was an accomplished golfer; enjoyed bowling in numerous area leagues; and was an avid gardener and woodworker.
A decorated veteran of the United States Navy, he served during WWII in the Pacific theater of operations as a Gunnersmate and a Mineman.
He was a lifetime member of both the VFW Post 5286, Farrell, and the American Legion Post 299, Sharon, and was a former member of the American Legion Post 160, Farrell, PA.
He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Dorothy Cashier, who he married on May 3, 1947.
He leaves his two daughters, Barbara M. Keller, Winter Haven, FL., and Nancy S. Chavka, Pleasant Gap, PA.; His two sons, Charles Chavka Jr. and his wife Jane of Hickory, N.C., and Richard D. Chavka and his wife, Oliviya, of South Kent, CT.; Nine grandchildren, and a brother, Fred 'Mick' Chavka, Hartford, OH.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his sister, Sophie Kolar, and a brother Anthony Chavka.

Services: A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday (12-8-10) in the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer 5130 E. State St., Hermitage, with Rev Dennis Blauser officiating.
