Obituary

Catherine R. Smith, 99, a lifelong resident of Union Township, passed away on Tuesday morning November 10, 2015 at the Jameson Care Center. Catherine was born on April 21, 1916 in Union Twp. to the late John C. and Pearl Hutchinson Carr. She was a 1934 graduate of Union High School. Following high school, Catherine was employed as a waitress at the former Castle Inn at Parkstown Corners in the 1930's. In the 1940's she gained employment as a secretary at the former Pontiac Garage which was located in what is now the Central building in downtown New Castle. Catherine was married to James W. Smith on January 18, 1943 and he preceded her in death on August 8, 2000 after fifty seven loving years of marriage. During the 1950's and thru the 70's Catherine enjoyed duck pin bowling, golfing and boating at Conneaut Lake with her family. In her later years she took pleasure in traveling, reading and playing cards. She was a member of the American Contract Bridge League, where she attained the rank of National Master. Catherine is survived by a daughter, Sandra Kay Smith, with whom she made her home and her son James W. Smith Jr. of Pittsburgh. She is also survived by two nieces, Shirley (Dave) Hofius of Titusville, FL and Louise (Ron) Thompson of Pittsburgh along with a nephew, Robert (Betty) Carr of New Castle. Besides her parents and husband, Catherine is preceded in death by four brothers; John Francis Carr, Norman Carr, Edward Carr and Leo Carr; two sisters, infant Ursula Carr and Mary Carr Sankey; along with her two nephews, James and John Carr. Calling hours will be held on Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory,111 W. falls St. A funeral service will be conducted at 4:00 p.m. in the funeral by the Rev. Thomas R. Scott. Entombment will be in Castle View Memorial Gardens.
