Obituary

Catherine Patricia "Pat" Mulligan of Sharon passed away at 5:44 p.m. Saturday, April 28, 2018, in her home. She was 87.

Mrs. Mulligan was born June 1, 1930, in Masury, a daughter of Michael James and Catherine Isabella Henighan. She was a 1948 alumna and class salutatorian of Brookfield High School and earned an associate degree from Penn State, Shenango Valley Campus.

Pat began her career at the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp. following high school and then worked for the law office of Routman, Jones, Irwin and Goldstone in Sharon.  She opened and managed the Kennedy Christian High School book store in 1975 and served as the director of development at KCHS from 1981 to 1983.  She and her husband were instrumental in spearheading the original Carnizar at KCHS.  Pat retired in 1990 as the Regional Marketing Director for Crown America Corp. where she won an international marketing award in 1987.

Her husband, Thomas E. Mulligan, whom she married August 27, 1948, passed away October 12, 1998.

A devout Catholic, Pat was an active member of St. Joseph Church, Sharon, where she served as a Eucharistic minister and was a Confraternity of Christian Doctrine (CCD) instructor.  (She also taught CCD at St. Anthony's Church in Sharon)  Pat was a member of the Prison Ministry at St. Joseph's for more than 20 years and was the recipient of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania's Department of Corrections volunteer of the year award in 2005. She was also a volunteer for the church food pantry and received the Caritas Award from Catholic Charities of the Erie Diocese in 1999.

Pat was a member of the Secular Franciscan Order (formerly Third Order of St. Francis) and was the formation director of Holy Spirit Franciscan Fraternity, hosted by St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, Sharon. Pat was involved in Pre Cana (marriage counseling team) and the pro-life movement.  She started the Peace Awards, given annually by the Shenango Valley Catholic Schools, and belonged to the Erie Diocesan Cursillo Movement.

Pat provided a home for five foster children.

She is survived by four daughters, Michelle A. Sakony (Michael), Hermitage; Jule Farmartino, Jacksonville, FL; Kathy Smith, Granville, OH; and Patti Mulligan, Fleming Island, FL; four sons, Tom Mulligan (Leslie), Palm Coast, FL; Terry Mulligan (Ann), Williston, FL; Tim Mulligan (Nancy), Brookfield, OH; and Shawn Mulligan (Vicky), Hermitage; a sister, Renie Cardamon (Jim), Hermitage; 21 grandchildren; and 23 great grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, Pat was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Mary Delores Cabraja; a son-in-law, Rocky Farmartino; and a daughter-in-law, Carol (Stefanovsky) Mulligan.

Pat's family would like to thank Sharon Regional Hospice, Home Instead Senior Care and a special friend and caregiver, Hulanda Ngo, for their exceptional care and compassion for Pat.

The family suggest memorial contributions be made to Sharon Regional Hospice, 1955 Shenango Valley Fwy., Hermitage, PA 16148.

Calling hours will be 4 to 7p.m. Friday ( 5/04/2018 ) in J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 1090 East State St., Sharon.

Mass of Christian burial will be 11 a.m. Saturday ( 5/05/2018 ) in St. Joseph's Church, 79 Case Ave., Sharon, with Rev. Thomas Whitman, pastor, as celebrant.

Entombment: St. Rose Cemetery mausoleum, Hermitage.
