IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Carl L.
Verholek
January 18, 1938 – January 16, 2025
Carl L. Verholek, 86, of Hermitage, passed suddenly on Thursday, January 16, 2025, in his home.
Mr. Verholek was born on January 18, 1938, in Farrell, a son of the late Charles and Margaret (Kutcher) Verholek. He was a 1955 graduate of Sharon High School and earned his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering at Youngstown State University. He also honorably served his country in the U.S. Army Artillery Unit.
He had a passion for music and playing the piano. At a young age, Carl learned how to tune piano, and traveled throughout the region working on pianos. He later became the Vice President of Cattron, Sharpsville, which grew to the largest radio control company in the world. He mentored, taught and led his company family to design some of the finest remote controls in the industry, they can be found installed on industrial cranes and locomotives, amusement park rides, theater props and many other pieces of equipment too numerous to mention.
Carl attended Grace Chapel Community Church, Hermitage.
He received great joy giving back to his community, impelling him to serve on the board of the Community Foundation of Western PA and Eastern OH, and the Youngstown Air Force Base. He was also a member of the Shenango Valley Corvette Club.
Carl was an avid golfer but was interested in planes and flying. He had his private pilot license and later in life began building model planes. He also worked out regularly and was honored with a bench-pressing record for his age group. Additionally, Carl was a lifelong learner, devoting a significant amount of time to studying math and science.
Many will remember him for his generosity, awarding scholarships annually, and helping countless homeless veterans find a home.
He is survived by a son, Bob Verholek, Sharpsville; his partner of 22 years, Dianne Roberts; four stepsons, Michael Davison, Sharpsville, Jason Barbour-Roberts (Matthew), Pittsburgh, Jonathan Roberts (Ashley), Grove City, and Jeremy Roberts, Pittsburgh; a granddaughter, Maren Roberts; a niece, Lee Ann Wester (Aaron); and two nephews, Brian and Michael DeMartinis.
In addition to his parents, Carl was preceded in death by a sister, Diane Kilgore.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be directed to the Salvation Army, 660 Fisher Hill St., Sharon, PA 16146; or the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, at www.t2t.org
