Obituary

Carl W. Phillips, 324 McClure Ave., Sharon, passed away at 6:47 a.m. Wednesday (2-18-09) in the hospital of the Sharon Regional Health System, following a brief illness. He was 93.
Mr. Phillips was born May 8, 1915 in Sharon a son of the late Daniel G. and Gertrude Fromm Phillips.
A lifelong city resident, he was a 1934 graduate of Sharon High School.
Mr. Phillips retired as a foreman in August of 1973 from the former Sharon Transformer Division of the Westinghouse Electric Corp. where he was employed for 36 years. Earlier in his life he worked as a rural carrier for the former News Telegraph in Sharon and following his retirement was a carrier for many years at Chadderton Trucking, Sharon.
Mr. Phillips was a lifelong active member of St. Joseph Church, Sharon. In his youth, Carl was an outstanding athlete. He played basketball and was a standout softball player, having pitched for many fast pitch softball teams including: Westinghouse, St. Joseph Church, Jack's Grill and Church Motors. Among other interests, Carl enjoyed traveling and hunting and fishing in Forest County where he had a camp. At the age of 80, he completed par-legal courses at Penn State University, Shenango Valley Campus.
Surviving are: his wife of 73 years, the former Rita C. Hess, whom he married September 26, 1935; four sons, Richard Phillips and his wife Jacqueline, Sharpsville; Donald Phillips and his wife Darlene, The Villages, FL; Thomas Phillips and his wife Joan, Brookfield, Ohio; and Edward 'Ted' Phillips and his wife Barbara, Erie, PA; a sister, Marion Grgurich, Hermitage; a brother, Edwin D. Phillips and his wife Marion, Hermitage; ten grandchildren; and 16 great grandchildren.
Besides his parents, Carl was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Phillips and Donald Phillips who died in infancy.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to St. Joseph Church Food Pantry, 79 Case Ave., Sharon, PA 16146.
Calling hours will be from 6-8 p.m. Friday (2-20-09) in the J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 1090 E. State St., Sharon.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Saturday (2-21-09) in St. Rose Cemetery Chapel, Dutch Lane, Hermitage, with the Rev. J. Thomas Dugan, senior associate of St. Joseph Church, Sharon, as celebrant.
Entombment: St. Rose Cemetery, Hermitage.
