Boyd T. McMurdy, 65, of Sharpsville, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, August 25, 2018, in VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System.

Boyd was born May 19, 1953, in New Castle, a son of the late Boyd T. and Jean (Campbell) McMurdy. He attended Farrell High School and Penn State Shenango campus.

In his senior year of high school, Boyd enlisted in the US Navy. He served during the Vietnam war aboard the USS Connole as a machinist mate. Following his honorable discharge he began working for the US Postal Service. He was employed at the Sharon and Hermitage post office for a combined 33 years, retiring in 2008.

Boyd was a member of the American Legion Post #162, Sharpsville; the VFW Post #1338, Sharon; and the Disabled American Vets (DAV) Mercer County Chapter 55. He volunteered at St. John XXIII Home, Hermitage, as the Santa Claus at the annual breakfast with Santa. He enjoyed music, spending time with his grandchildren, and starting plants from seeds for his garden. Boyd also loved his dog, Spike.

He is survived by his wife, the former Sharon Gardner, whom he married  August 6, 1977; a daughter, Tracie Monoc and her husband Michael, Sharon; a son, Timothy McMurdy and his fiancé Monica Kline, Indio, CA; two grandchildren, Samuel and Olivia Monoc; two sisters, Lynne Lomas and Rita Marshall and her husband Robert; and two brothers, Wayne Sides and his wife Ruby, all of Florida; and Chris McMurdy, Farrell.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System, 4100 Allequippa St., Pittsburgh, PA 15213.

Boyd's family would like to thank the staff in the ICU at VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System.

Calling hours will be 1 p.m. until the time of the service Friday (08/31/2018) in J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 1090 East State St., Sharon.

Funeral service will be 2:30 p.m. Friday with military honors at 2:20 p.m., rendered by Sharon Honor Guard, in the funeral home.
