Betty S. Purdy of Hermitage passed away unexpectedly at 12:10 a.m. Monday (6-6-11) in the Coronary Care Unit of Sharon Regional Health System. She was 83.
Mrs. Purdy was born April 10, 1928, in Pittsburgh to Arthur R. and Bessie Keil Smith.
She graduated in 1945 from Shaler High School in Glenshaw, Pa. After raising her family, she enrolled in what was then Sharon General Hospital School of Nursing and graduated in 1981. She earned her bachelor of science degree in nursing from Penn State University in 1987 and her masterfs of education degree from Penn State in 1992.
Betty worked as a registered nurse at Sharon Regional Health System for 10 years, where she also taught obstetrics to aspiring nursing students. She retired in 1993 and was a member of the Retired Nurses Association.
Mrs. Purdy played an active and loving role in helping to raise her grandchildren, Keith and Carly Jones of Sharon. She also enjoyed volunteering with the local Meals-on-Wheels program through Christ Lutheran Church in Sharon. She was an avid reader and an active participant in the Read and Discuss group through the Sharon Life Long Learning Council (SLLLC).
Her husband, Norman M. Purdy Jr., whom she married Feb. 8, 1947, passed away May 13, 1994.
She is survived by her four children, Norman M. Purdy III, Grand Blanc, Mich., and his wife, Susan; Stuart K. Purdy, Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and his fianceE Mohini Colacilli; Joan Karns, Erie, and her husband, Alan; and Laura Jones, Sharon; as well as 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Besides her husband, Betty was preceded in death by her parents and a grandson, Matthew A. Karns.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to a scholarship fund founded in memory of her grandson, Matthew Karns, who was a physical therapist in San Antonio, Texas.
