Obituary

Betty Marie Horkey, Mertz Towers, Sharpsville, formerly of Sherman Ave., Sharon, passed away peacefully at 3:29 a.m. Sunday ( 3-20-16 ) in Nugents Convalescent Home, Hermitage, following a brief illness. She was 88.

Betty was born in the Mercer Cottage Hospital in Mercer, Pa., one of four children born to Michael and Goldie Reed Jablonovsky.

A lifelong resident of Mercer County, she graduated one year early from Grove City High School in 1944. Following high School, she worked for the former Sharon Transformer Division of the Westinghouse Electric Corporation as a torpedo inspector as a part of the war effort. Since her early years she worked at the Mercer County Court House and for Farmers Home Administration

Betty enjoyed sports, especially baseball. She never got into trouble in school, in reality, she just never got caught.

She married Ernest Horkey on April 16, 1947, they enjoyed 62 years together raising a family, traveling the country, camping and simply enjoying life to the fullest.

A homemaker, Betty was a skilled gardener and an excellent cook. She loved to prepare favorite meals for her grandchildren and great grandchildren and she also enjoyed helping them prepare special holiday recipes. Caring for her family and her home were always her top priorities.

She was an active member of Sharpsville United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women, she assisted with both the church nursery and bible school in past years.

Her husband Ernest passed away January 12, 2009. She is survived by her three daughters, Michele Means and her husband Robert, Sharon, Arlene Horkey, Hermitage, Marsha Hubicz, Columbus, Oh, and one son, Martin Horkey and his wife Janet, Berwick, Pa; a brother Frank Jablonovsky and his wife Gail, Grove City, four grandchildren, Stanley (Amber) Goleb, Cray Robert, Nathanael (Kelsey) Horkey and David Horkey, six great grandchildren, Michael Goleb, Danielle and Kenyon Vogt, Lily, Ayden, and Elijah Horkey.

In addition to her husband, she was also preceded in death by her parents, an infant brother Michael Jablonovsky, and her sister Bonnie Osborne.

Calling hours: 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday ( 3-22-16 ) on her birthday in the J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory Inc. 1090 E. State St. Sharon.

Services: 11:00 a.m. Wednesday ( 3-23-16 ) in Sharpsville First United Methodist Church with Rev. Joseph Yurko, pastor of the church officiating.

Interment: America's Cemetery, Hermitage.
