Obituary

Betty "Betsy" Gargano, 86, of Hermitage, passed away on Sunday morning, May 12, 2024, in St. John XXIII Home.

Mrs. Gargano was born on September 27, 1937, in Sharon, a daughter of the late George and Esther (Thompson) Hostetter. She was a 1955 graduate of Mercer High School and in 1958 she became a registered nurse after studying at the Sharon General School of Nursing.

Betsy was one of the first Certified Operating Room Nurses at Sharon General Hospital. She continued her education throughout her career, obtaining certifications in laser procedures and as a Certified Perioperative Nurse. In surgery, she held positions as a staff nurse, head nurse, clinical coordinator, education coordinator, and laser and urology team leader. She was a participant for over 25 years in the nurse's study at Harvard Medical School. In 2007, she retired from Sharon General Hospital after 50 years of service.

She married Anthony J. "Tony" Gargano on September 26, 1959, in Our Lady of Fatima Church, Farrell. She and Tony renewed their vows on their 40th wedding anniversary.

Betsy loved to travel and did so extensively throughout the US and Canada with her husband and four children. Following retirement, she and her husband Tony made several cross-country trips with her sister, Kathy and brother-in-law, Bob. They cruised the Virgin Islands, vacationed in Las Vegas, and traveled to Alaska, the Hawaiian Islands, Japan, Mexico, Switzerland, Austria and made multiple trips to Italy to visit family.

She is survived by her husband, Anthony Gargano; four children, Marc Gargano (Mariellen), Hermitage, Beth Stigliano, Hermitage, John Gargano (Carol), Sharon, and Brett Gargano (Terra), Ellicott City, MD; six grandchildren, Maria, Leah, Tony, Gianna, Zola, and Rocco; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Katherine Anderson, Greenville.

In addition to her parents, Betsy was preceded in death by a sister, Donna Hostetter, a brother-in-law, Bob Anderson; a son-in-law, Bob Stigliano; and a granddaughter, Cara Gargano.
