A memorial service will be held for Betty Flamberg, John XXIII Home, who passed away quietly at 5:40 a.m. on Monday, (1-25-10) in the home of complications from Alzheimers. She was 92 years old and she leaves behind an extended family that greatly admired her spirit, patience, and gentle nature.
She was born Betty Jane Kile in Kansas City MO, September 2, 1917 but was raised in Struthers, Ohio by her parents, Leon and Helen Parker Kile along with two older sisters, Josephine and Dorothy. She graduated at age 16 from Struthers High School as class Valedictorian and Homecoming Queen Attendant. Betty attended Youngstown, College until 1937 when she married Otto Molnar of Sharon, Pa. They moved to South Ninth Street in Sharpsville in 1941 where she lived for the next 65 years. Their 57 year marriage was blessed with four children, Richard Molnar of Savannah GA, Thomas Molnar of Washington Crossing, PA, Dr. Jane Raymond of Upper St. Clair, PA, and Jack Molnar of Clarksville, GA. Otto Passed away in 1994 . In July of 2000, at age 82, Betty married Dr. Ira Flamberg in the 'Social event of the season' with a guest list that included over 150 of the Shenango Valley's senior citizens.
During World War II, Betty was a telephone operator and driver for the American Red Cross at the Camp Reynolds POE and POW facility. Betty then spent the rest of her life caring for her family, friends, and community. She was a long time member of the First Presbyterian Church of Sharon and regularly donated monies and clothing to the poor through the church's Women's Bazaar. Betty was a long time player and director of at the Shenango Valley Bridge Club along with being a certified Bridge teacher and ACBL Life Master. She regularly played golf at the Sharon Country Club and even broke 100 one time (yes it was 99). Well into her 80's , Betty would enjoy a fast paced 4 to 5 mile morning walk around the lakes, exercise trail, and picnic areas of Buhl Park. And, she would just as readily play softball, soccer, or football in the backyard with her grandchildren.
Without fanfare or want of thanks, Betty always put her family and others ahead of her own needs. 'BG' (as she was called by her family) was never known to raise he voice, lose her temper, or complain. She was a whiz with her sewing machine and was able to make beautiful clothing and accessories for her daughter, Jane, and her granddaughters, Kitt, Allison, and Kerry plus many special outfits for Barbie Dolls, Cabbage Patch Kids and other play dolls in need of a new outfit. When the stitching of 'Pretty Bear' came undone or 'Ducky' lost an eye, they were miraculously healed the next morning in BG's 'hospital' back in the sewing room. When her family visited her in Sharpsville, she would quietly make 3 or 4 desserts so everyone could have their favorite. She was a very special wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend.
Betty leaves behind her husband, Ira of Hermitage, four children, nine grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren. Regretfully, her young great-grandchildren will miss the privilege of knowing one of God's finest creations. For the past five years, Alzheimers robbed her of her strength, her memory and her speech. But, it could not take away her smile and that gentile nature. The average grade of the angels in heaven has been raised a few notches.
Memorial contributions may be made to The First Presbyterian Church 600 E State St. Sharon, Pa. 16146. or to Buhl Park and sent to Buhl Park Corporation 730 Forker Blvd. Hermitage, PA 16148.
