Obituary


Bette C. Acker, 93, of New Castle passed away peacefully with her family by her side at 9:03 a.m. February 4, 2017, in her residence. Mrs. Acker was born December 17, 1923, in New Castle, a daughter of the late Edward V. and Margaret Cosgrove Callahan.

Following her graduation from New Castle High School she matriculated to the University Of Pittsburgh School Of Nursing, graduating in 1946 with a Bachelors of Nursing Degree.

Bette was employed by the former Jameson Memorial Hospital as a nursing instructor, and previously served as the Director of Nursing. She retired from the Neshannock Twp. School District after 30 years of service as the School Nurse.

Bette was a member of the Army Corp of Nurses during WWII, and also served during her years at the University of Pittsburgh.

She was a founding member of St. Camillus Church.

Her husband of over 62 years, Thomas S. Acker, whom she married September 3, 1949, preceded her in death September 20, 2013.

Bette is survived by her four children: Thomas E. Acker and his wife Maureen of Midland, MI; David H. Acker and his wife Susan of New Castle; Peggy Chakan and her husband Rod of Cranberry Township, PA; and Kathy Acker of Lancaster, PA; a sister Dolores Callahan of New Castle; and a brother Edward Callahan and his wife Jean of Mechanicsburg, PA.

Also surviving are seven grandchildren, Mary Beth Acker; Katie Acker Schmidt and her husband Matt; Rodney T. Chakan and his wife Marie; Matthew C. Chakan; Megan Chakan Jaeger and her husband Tim; Brianna Acker Fair and her husband Zach; and Rachael Acker; and 6 great grandchildren, Gabi, Jacob, Remi, and Ava Chakan of Chesapeake, VA; Julia Schmidt of Pittsburgh, PA; and Thomas A. Fair of Dentin, TX.

The family suggests memorial contributions may be made to Allegheny Health Network, Home Health Hospice Division, Four Allegheny Center, 9th Floor, Pittsburgh, PA 15212.

Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday (2-8-17) in the J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home, 111 W. Fall Street, New Castle.

A procession will leave the funeral home at 9:30 a.m. Thursday (2-9-17) for St. Camillus Church, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. by Rev. Michael Peck, pastor.

Interment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery.
