Obituary

Beryl L. Hogue, 97, of New Castle passed away peacefully Sunday morning, September 30, 2018, in her residence.

Mrs. Hogue was born September 3, 1921, in Leesburg, PA, a daughter of the late Edward and Margaret (Magee) Harrison.

Beryl was married to her beloved husband of 65 years, Donald C. Hogue, on September 24, 1940. He passed away on October 9, 2005.

She was an active member of Harmony Baptist Church, Slippery Rock Twp., where she served as the editor of the Harmony Herald, the church's monthly newsletter, up until this past June.

An active member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Beryl was a Past Worthy Matron of the Cathedral Chapter 440, New Castle, and a current member of the Mercer Chapter 180. Additionally, she served 35 years as Pennsylvania's Supreme Inspector of the International Order of Rainbow for Girls. Her service was commemorated with several awards, most notably being the first woman to receive the John Wanamaker Masonic Humanitarian Medal. Beryl also participated in the Sparklers Bible Study at First Baptist Church, New Castle.

She enjoyed scrapbooking and sewing.

Surviving are: a daughter, Hedy Takacs and her husband, John, of Mentor, OH; and two grandsons, Jeremy Takacs, of Painesville, OH, and Keven Takacs, of Mentor, OH.

In addition to her parents and husband, Beryl was preceded in death by a sister, Alberta Shelar; and five brothers, Richard, Herbert, Edward Jr., Robert and Donald Harrison.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Harmony Baptist Church, 4103 Ellwood Rd, New Castle, PA 16101.

Calling hours will be 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday (10-2-18) in J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 111 W. Falls St., New Castle; and from 10 a.m. until the time of service Wednesday (10-3-18) in Harmony Baptist Church.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, in the church, with Rev. Jeffrey Mackay, pastor, officiating.

Interment: Harmony Baptist Cemetery, New Castle.
