Bertha Dell Smith
Bertha Dell Smith, 94, formerly of the Harbor in Union Township, passed away the morning of Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2015, at Golden Hill Nursing Home.

Mrs. Smith was born in New Castle on March 24, 1921, a daughter of the late James C. and Bertha D. Robinson French. She was a 1939 graduate of Union High School.

Her husband, John Edward Smith, whom she married on Oct. 31, 1942, in St. Mary's Church by the Rev. Francis McCarter, passed away on Dec. 26, 2008. They celebrated their 66th anniversary in 2008.

Bertha was a member of St. Mary's Church, its Ladies Guild, Little Flower Club and was one of the founding members of the 500 Card Club.  She was a member of the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution). But most of all, Bertha was a loving wife, mother and grandmother to her family.

Survivors include her children, Rebecca Hilton and her husband, James, of New Castle, John Smith and his wife, Regina, of Las Vegas, James D. Smith of New Castle, Jule Horney and her husband, Timothy, of Edinburg and Christine DeGaton and her husband, DeWayne, of Bessemer; her sister, Gladys M. Lasky of New Castle; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and her great-great granddaughter. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by six brothers.

Calling hours will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory, 111 W. Falls St.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at noon Saturday in St. Mary's Church, conducted by the Rev. Frank Almade, pastor.
