Obituary

Bernard "Barney" C. Songer, The Villa's a St. Paul Homes, West Salem Township, formerly of Sharon, passed away peacefully of natural causes at 12:30 p.m. Sunday (6-28-15) at his residence. He was 100 years old. He was born in Farrell September 17, 1914 one of four children born to Bernard S. and Mabel Reinsel Songer. A lifelong area resident, Barney graduated from Farrell High School at the age of 16. He was employed at the former Sharon Steel Corporation's Farrell Plant for more than 40 years where he worked in several capacities; he retired as a maintenance foreman. He was a former member of St. Joseph's Church, Sharon. In his younger years he enjoyed fishing and the outdoors, a good game of cards, and he was a voracious reader. His first wife the former Alma Zimmer whom he married October 28, 1944, passed away in 1948. His second wife Pauline Edwards passed away in 1974. He is survived by two daughters, Patricia "Tish" Kribbs, Cranberry Township, and Barbara Grove and her husband James Jr., Sharon, two grandsons, James Grove III, and Matthew Grove and his wife Erica, two great granddaughters, Lydia Grove, and Emily Jervis. In addition to his parents and his two wives, he was also preceded in death by his two brothers, Charles and Thomas Songer, a sister, Priscilla Hetra, and his long time companion, Dorothy Eberling. His family would like to thank the staff and residents of St. Paul Homes, and the staff from Southern Care Hospice for the kind and compassionate care rendered towards their father and grandfather in his final years at the Villa's, it was truly appreciated. In lieu of flowers, his family suggests that memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Shenango Valley Community Library 11 North Sharpsville Ave. Sharon, PA 16146, or to the Buhl Park Foundation, 715 Hazen Road, Hermitage, Pennsylvania. Calling hours and services: In keeping with his wishes there will be no services at this time. His family will gather at a later date for a private celebration of his life. Funeral arrangements are under the direction the J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory Inc. 1090 E. State St. Sharon.
