Bernard Dennis Scully of 2305 Downing Lane in the Patagonia section of Hermitage passed away at 11:13 a.m. Saturday (12-26-09) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System following a brief illness. He was 87.
Mr. Scully was born February 10, 1922 in North Adams, Massachusetts a son of the late Dennis B. and Bernadette Molloy Scully.
He was raised in Greenfield, Massachusetts where he attended Holy Trinity Parochial Grade School and graduated from Greenfield High School in 1939.
He worked at Greenfield Tap and Die before enlisting in, what was then, the US Army Air Corps. on May 1, 1942. Mr. Scully served as a Sergeant with the Air Corps during W.W. II and was a Link Flight Instructor. He was honorably discharged on November 30, 1945 and enrolled at Bliss Electrical School, Tacoma Park, MD, graduating from there in 1947. He moved to Sharon in 1947, earned his private pilots license the same year and was employed at the former Sharon Transformer Division of the Westinghouse Electric Corporation on the test floor for 36 years until his retirement in 1983.
Mr. Scully was a longtime active member of the Church of Sacred Heart, Sharon, where he was a commentator, money counter, member of the CCD steering committee, chairman of the annual St. Patrick's Day Dance for ten years and served on the Church Men's Council. Mr. Scully was a member of the former Kennedy Christian High School Boosters and was the announcer at its annual carnizaar. He was also active in his community and served on the former Hickory Township Parks and Recreation Committee for several years; was a charter member and past chairman of the Patagonia Civic Club Organization; served as chairman of the Patagonia Landfill Protest Group and the Upper Shenango Valley Water Pollution Control Authority for 12 years from 1972-1984 and was their Executive Director from 1984-1989. He was a past president of the former Patagonia PTA, a Cub Scout Leader and was one of the original organizers of the Patagonia Little League where he helped build and maintain the field. Mr. Scu!
lly was proud of his Irish heritage and traveled to Ireland in 1978 with his wife. He loved singing Irish songs and celebrating St. Patrick's Day. He was recognized as Irishman of the Year in 2005 by the Mercer County Ancient Order of Hibernians. Mr. Scully enjoyed remodeling his home and taking care of his yard. He was constantly tinkering and repairing devices and electrical appliances. He considered himself an amateur inventor who loved making something from nothing. Some of his 'inventions' were a leaf catcher he built, a musical toilet seat and a speedboat as a teenager.
Surviving are: the love of his life, the former Margaret Heubel, whom he married on October 23, 1948 in the former St. Joseph Church, Sharon. Bernie met her on his 27th birthday, their first date was on Valentines Day and he proposed to her on St. Patrick's Day. He also leaves his five children, Bernadette Scully, Pittsburgh; Dennis Scully, Bradford, PA; David Scully and his wife Maggie, Harrisburg, PA; Richard Scully and his wife Linda, Rochester, NY; and Philip Scully, Fairport, NY; ten grandchildren, Erin Scully, Sarah Scully, Kevin Scully, Tommy Scully, Patrick Scully, Rick Scully, Kate Scully, Brittany Scully, Morgan Scully and Sari Fisher; a brother, John Scully and his wife Mary, Plattsburg, NY; a brother-in-law, L.A. 'Andy' Scott, Greenfield Massachusetts; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Bernie was preceded in death by three children who died in infancy, Edward Scully, Margaret Ann Scully and Michael Jude Scully; and two sisters, Frances Scott and Betty Graham.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Church of Sacred Heart, 40 S. Irvine Ave., Sharon, PA 16146; or to a charity of the donor's choice.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Tuesday (12-29-09) in Church of the Sacred Heart, Sharon, with the Rev. Henry Andrae, pastor, as celebrant. Everyone is asked to go directly to the church.
Interment: St. Rose Cemetery, Hermitage.
