Mr. Bernard F. Halgas, 442 Lucy St., Masury, OH passed away at 12:45 p.m., Monday, December 29, 2008 at UPMC Shadyside Hospital, Pittsburgh. He was 67.
Mr. Halgas was born December 12, 1941 in Trafford, PA the son of Frank A. and Helen N. Polnar Halgas. He was a 1959 alumnus of Trafford High School. He attended Geneva College and the Indiana University of Pennsylvania where he studied Psychology and English. He began his career as a transportation manager with Eazor Express, West Middlesex, PA. Over the years he has worked as a terminal manager for various transport companies located throughout western Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio. He retired in 2004 as the Director of Operations for J & S Inc, Cheswick, PA, the distribution service for over 800 Eckered Drug Stores.
At the age of 11, Bernie developed a passion for competition drum corp when he joined the Black Knights Drum Corp. in Trafford. He later joined the Steel City Ambassador Alumni Corp, Pittsburgh and in 1998 was instrumental in establishing the West Penn Alumni Drum and Bugle Corps that represented all drum corp activity in the Pittsburgh area. Over the years he competed, performed exhibitions and marched in many parades throughout Pennsylvania and Ohio. He was most proud of being able to perform for Lynn Swann's induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame and for being the first musical group to perform at the inaugural game at Heinz Field. A Pittsburgh Panther fan, he was a season ticket holder for both the basketball and football teams for many years. He is a former member of St. Bernadette's Church, Masury.
He is survived by a daughter, Melissa B. Halgas, Pittsburgh, two step-daughters, Catherine A. Mortimer, Sharon and Vicki L. Cathcart and her husband Robert, Hermitage; two step-sons, Edward Mortimer, Brookfield and Ronald Mortimer and his wife Sharon, Masury; a sister, Rosemarie Nowacki and her husband Michael, Littleton, Colorado; a brother, Frank A. Halgas, Pasadena, Maryland; his former wife, Stella Hummell Halgas, Brookfield; 10 step-grandchildren, Shannon Woodward, Dominic Albanese, Jason Hummell, Noah and Bobbi Jo Cathcart, Jesse Lonsinger and Jacob, Luke, Olivia and Chad Mortimer and a step-great grandson, Gavin Woodward. He was preceded in death by his parents.
