Obituary

Barbara E. Schnur, Sharon, passed away at 2:30 a.m. Thursday (1-20-11). She was 90.

Mrs. Schnur was born December 20, 1920 in Croydon, England, the only child of the late Robert and May Speight Nigh.

She was educated in a private school in England where she was the goalie for the field hockey team. Following her graduation, Barbara joined the Red Cross and studied nursing for three years at the W. Cornwall Hospital in Penzance, Cornwall, England. It was during this time that she met her husband, Michael Schnur, who was serving in the United States military during WW II and the two were married March 3, 1944 in England. She immigrated to the United States in 1946 and settled in Sharon with her husband and their infant daughter.

She was a member of St. Joseph Church, Sharon. Barbara was a charter member of the former local War Bride Club from which she established many lasting friendships. A gifted homemaker, she was an accomplished seamstress, enjoyed knitting, and was a very good cook, particularly her preparation of many traditional English fare dishes. An artist, she won many ribbons at local art shows and Buhl Day for her landscape and nature oil paintings and was a member of the Valley Arts Guild. Barbara was an avid reader and a member and supporter of the Shenango Valley Community Library, Sharon.

Her husband of 37 years, Michael Schnur, died on March 27, 1981.

Surviving are: two daughters, Judith Rocco and her husband Richard, Hermitage; and Christine Mitcheltree and her husband Richard, Sharon; a son, Robert M. Schnur, Hermitage, and his fiancé, Judith McConville, Sharon; eight grandchildren, Christopher Rocco, Tina Commisso and her husband Dominic; Matthew, Michael and Nicholas Schnur; Heather Butchy and her husband Douglas; Jennifer Simon and her husband John; and Jessica Lepak and her husband Joel; six great grandchildren, Flora, Geno and Giulia Commisso; Norah and Amelia Butchy; and Joshua Simon; and one great grandchild expected in July. An only child, she always longed for a family. 'Now I have my family all around me and I could not have asked for a better life, I am so very happy.'

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to St. Joseph Church, 79 Case Ave.; or to the Shenango Valley Community Library 11 N. Sharpsville Ave., both Sharon, PA 16146.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Monday (1-24-11) in St. Joseph Church, Sharon, with the Rev. Glenn R. Whitman, pastor, as celebrant. The family will receive friends immediately following the Mass.
