Barbara K. Smith, 82, a lifelong resident of New Castle, passed away the afternoon of Friday, Sept. 4, 2015, at Jameson Hospital. Barbara was born Nov. 26, 1932, in Ellwood City, a daughter of Clair and Hazel Kauffman. She moved to Shenango Township as a young girl. She was a 1950 graduate of Shenango High School. After graduation, she was employed as a secretary in the administration office of the Shenango School District. She was later employed by the Rouser Agency in New Castle as a secretary, receptionist and event planner. She retired from Jameson Hospital, where she was a patient escort for 15 years. Barbara was an active member of Independent Methodist Church on Butler Road and was a member of the Homemakers Club at Center Church. She was also a 4-H leader. She enjoyed traveling, watching birds and wildlife and will be remembered for her thoughtful and helpful ways toward others. Surviving are a daughter, Mary Lou Smith and her companion, Scott Rowe, of New Castle; a son, Gary Smith of New Castle; two grandsons; and several nieces and nephews. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents; two infant sons; and her companion, Francis St. John. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on Thursday at the J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory Inc., 111 W. Falls St. A funeral service will be held 4 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home with the Rev. Frederick Gilbert, pastor of Independent Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will be in Wurtemburg Cemetery, Ellwood City.
