She was a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. She was an ardent supporter of the National Arbor Day Foundation, Humane Society of the United States, United States Olympic Campaign, and Paralyzed Veterans of America. She is survived by two daughters, Jennifer A. Nelson and Danielle E. Mayo-LeVasseur, both Sunapee, N.H.; two sons, Donnie Merritt Jr., Meadville; and Michael A. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Linda Audette; her domestic partner, John Fillo; and her dear friend, J. Kenneth Casey. Jean had a great love for her garden, which wasn't just about plants. It was the way she expressed her love for all she helped, so they could see that happiness is the key to life. "Live, Laugh, Love." "Mama's garden sown with love Will be tended from up above. She took God's hand, and was set free, At peace for all eternity. If her parting has left a void, Please fill it with remembered joy. She wanted you all to know, She is the wind, the seas, and everything that grows." Jean's family would like to thank all her good friends in Sharpsville for their love and support through the years. The family suggests memorial contributions be made in her honor to American Cancer Society-East Central Division, Box 897, Hershey, PA 17033.
