Arthur L. Vanderveen of Hermitage passed away at
4 p.m.
Thursday, June 30, 2016, in his residence, after a valiant, but brief, battle with pancreatic cancer.
He was 91.
Mr. Vanderveen was born August 20, 1924, in Newton Falls, Ohio, a son of Gerrit K. and Grace (Visher) Vanderveen.
He was a 1942 graduate of Mercer High School and served as a Cpl. with the US Army Air Force during WW II.
Art was a self-employed homebuilder most of his life and retired from the State Correctional Facility, near Mercer, where he was a building and construction instructor for ten years.
He was an active member of Gentle Shepherd of the Nazarene, Hermitage.
During his retirement, he enjoyed taking rides in the country and woodworking.
Surviving are: his wife, the former Helen Dean, whom he married March 29, 1963, at the residence; a daughter, Cynthia S. Vanderveen; and a son, Gregory L. Vanderveen and his wife Gina, all of Mercer.
Art was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Jeanette Hayse; and four brothers, Cornelius, Buell, John and Sidney Vanderveen.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Gentle Shepherd Church of the Nazarene, 3480 Shenango Valley Freeway, Hermitage, PA 16148; or to a charity of the donor's choice.

Interment: Graceland Cemetery, New Castle, PA.
