Arlene Joan (Manilla) Egelsky of Girard, OH, formerly a resident of Hubbard, OH, and Yankee Lake Village where she resided for 35 years, passed away on July 22, 2017, at Northside Medical Center, Youngstown, OH. She was 77.
Mrs. Egelsky was born September 8, 1939, in Sharon, the daughter of Vito J. and Helen E. (Papai) Manilla. She attended the former St. Joseph Parochial Grade School, Sharon, and was a graduate of Sharon High School, the great class of 1957. Arlene graduated in 1961 from Youngstown State University, with a degree in business administration. She also attended Penn State University, Shenango Campus, where she received many certificates for seminars in business.
Arlene retired from Youngstown State University with 35 years of service. Following her retirement she taught adult business classes and was a substitute teacher at Mercer County Career Center.
Arlene was a former member of St. Joseph's Church, Sharon. She was also a member of the former Tau Kappa Nu, social sorority and served as secretary while in college, and served on the board for the former Kennedy Christian Eagles organization, as corresponding secretary and volunteered for many successful fundraisers. Arlene was very active and had 25 years perfect attendance in the American Business Women's Association. She was part of the Shenango Valley Charter Chapter; was past president of the Hubbard Area Charter Chapter, and named woman of the year in 1974; served as the first president of the former Penn-Ohio Chapter, and twice named woman of the year in 1985 and 1986. She served as a chairman of every committee while associated with ABWA.
Arlene loved to read, cook, play cards and cheer for the Ohio State Buckeyes, Michigan State Spartans and the Cleveland Cavaliers and Browns.
Arlene was the widow of John F. Egelsky II, whom she married in the old St. Joseph's Church, Sharon, on August 10, 1963. He passed away on March 10, 2012.
Surviving are: her two special grandsons, Zachary T. Darlington, with whom she made her home, and his fiance' Elizabeth Shamblin, both of Girard; and Jakob D. Darlington, Hubbard; and one special great grandson, whom she loved and brought her great joy, Jaxon D. Darlington, Girard; a brother, Jack Manilla and his wife Paula, St. Johns, Florida; a sister in law, Sally Manilla, Hubbard; two nieces and goddaughters, Jackie Hudson, CO; and Lisa Housteau, Canfield, OH; four nephews and godsons, John Manilla, MI; Paul Manilla, New York City; Bradley Manila, FL; and Bob Manilla, Columbus, OH; special nieces, Gina Beach, Kim Wallis, and Rose Egelsky; and five great nephews and four great nieces.
In addition to her husband, Arlene was preceded in death by her parents; her loving daughter, Wendy Darlington; a brother, Robert Manilla; and her in laws, John F. Egelsky, Sr. and Roberta June Egelsky Himes.
In lieu of flowers, Arlene suggest memorial contributions be made to her two grandsons.
Calling hour will be 10 a.m. until the time of the service Friday (07/28/2017) in St. Joseph's Church, 79 Case Ave., Sharon.
Memorial mass will be 11 a.m. Friday, in the church with Rev. Thomas Whitman, pastor, as celebrant.
