Obituary

A private funeral service will be held for Anthony 'Tony' V. Duich, 845 Fairfield Drive, Hermitage. He passed away peacefully at 8 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 9, 2011, in the critical care unit of UPMC Horizon, Farrell, after an extended illness. He was 86.

Mr. Duich was born April 19, 1924, in Farrell, a son of Stephen and Kata Perich Duich.

A lifelong area resident, he was a member of Farrell High School's graduating class of 1942. After his graduation from high school, Tony served with the USAAC (United States Army Air Corps) where he trained as a pilot and eventually became a B-24 bomber pilot during World War II. While in the service, he worked toward his bachelor's degree at North Carolina State University, Raleigh, and later finished his required studies at Pennsylvania State University, State College.

An insurance agent for many years, Mr. Duich owned and operated the Duich Insurance Agency for 52 years in Farrell and later in Hermitage. In 2004, the Duich Insurance Agency merged with Reinhardt Insurance Agency Inc., Sharon. In 1985, when the Shenango Valley was struck by several devastating tornadoes, Mr. Duich accepted the position as coordinator for the Mercer County Reconstruction Task Force. The task force was organized by the Shenango Valley Chamber of Commerce, which subsequently petitioned Mr. Duich to be its next executive director. Mr. Duich accepted the post and remained the chamber's top executive from 1985 until 1990.

Mr. Duich was also the director of the Mercer County Redevelopment Authority and its predecessor, the Farrell Redevelopment Authority. In the early 1970s, when the Shenango Valley Osteopathic Hospital was established in Farrell, Mr. Duich was selected to serve on the upstart hospital's board of directors. Tony was always hard at work both privately and in his community. He was especially mindful toward the education of young people and helping them succeed.

In his spare time he loved to play golf and he particularly enjoyed teeing it up at beautiful Tam O'Shanter Golf Course, Hermitage.

His wife, the former Marguerite Elia, whom he married July 5, 1952, survives at home. He is also survived by his brother, Dr. Joseph Duich and his wife Patricia, State College, and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, John Duich.

Mr. Duich was a supporter of golf education, and his family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Buhl Park Corp.'s First Tee Program, in care of Buhl Farm Trust, 715 Hazen Road Hermitage 16148.

Calling hours and service: In keeping with Mr. Duich's final request, there will be no visitation and his family will celebrate his life in a private gathering at a later date.
