Obituary

Anthony 'Tony' Liro, The Bentley House, 2400 Garden Way, Hermitage; formerly of Farrell, passed away at 1:30 a.m. Thursday (4-14-11) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. He was 91.

Mr. Liro was born March 11, 1920 in Martin's Creek, PA a son of Salvatore and Rosalia Miracola Liro.

He was educated in Martin's Creek and worked with the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) in New Mexico during the 1930's.

A decorated war veteran, Tony served as a rifleman with the US Army during WW II in the European Theater. He was the recipient of the Purple Heart; the European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon; the American Theater Campaign Ribbon; the Victory Medal; and the Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged January 17, 1946 and is a lifetime member of the Hickory VFW, Post 6166, Hermitage.

Tony retired in 1975 from Sharon Steel's former Farrell plant where he was employed for thirty years.

He was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Church and the Italian Home, both Farrell. He enjoyed working in his garden and watching old time television shows. He also loved music, particularly polka, classical and songs from the Big Band era. Tony was a amiable man who was part of the 'greatest generation'.

His beloved wife of 54 years, the former Florence D. Fanelli, whom he met in downtown Sharon, passed away April 21, 1998.

Surviving are: a son, Robert Anthony Liro and his wife Sharon, Sharon; a brother, Frank Liro and his wife Evelyn, Tampa, FL; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents and wife, Tony was preceded in death by two sisters, Rose Liro and Antoinette Beninatti; and three brothers, Santo, Larry and Joseph Liro.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Our Lady of Fatima Church, 601 Roemer Blvd., Farrell, PA 16121.

Calling hours will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today (4-15-11) in J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 1090 E. State St., Sharon.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday (4-16-11) in the funeral home with the Rev. Donald E. Berdis, pastor, officiating. The Hickory VFW, Post 6166, Honor Guard will render military honors for Mr. Liro prior to the service Saturday in the funeral home.

Interment: St. Anthony's Cemetery, Hermitage.
