Anthony "Tony" R. DeMartinis of Hermitage passed away peacefully at 6:16 p.m. Tuesday, March 12, 2019, in Clepper Manor, Sharon, surrounded by family and friends. He was 80.
Tony was born June 21, 1938, in Sharon, a son of the late Angelo and Ann (Gizzi) DeMartinis. He was raised in Farrell where he attended the former St. Ann's Parochial Grade School and was a 1956 graduate of Farrell High School.
He attended Gannon University in Erie and served in the Army as a MP while stationed at Fort Jackson, Columbia, SC. Tony retired as a correctional officer from the State Correctional Institution at Albion, Pa. where he was employed for more than 13 years and served as president of the prison union. He previously worked as a sales representative in the automotive and insurance industries and at the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp.
A devout Catholic, Tony was an active member of Our Lady of Fatima Church, Farrell, where he was a member and past president of its Holy Name Society. In recognition of his service to the church, the Holy Name Society honored him with the "Man of the Year" award. Degree, Sharon Assembly, where he was the Faithful Navigator.
Active in the community, Tony served as a Farrell City Councilman and on the Farrell Area School District Board of Directors. He was also a past president of the Young Democrats of Mercer County.
Tony enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles and music, particularly Big Band and opera.
Surviving are: a brother, Michael J. DeMartinis and his wife Georganne, of Hermitage; two loving nephews, Rev. Michael G. DeMartinis, of Erie; and Brian J. DeMartinis and his wife Audrey, of Florida; and several extended family members.
Besides his parents, Tony was preceded in death by a brother, Nicholas Regis DeMartinis.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Our Lady of Fatima Church, 601 Roemer Blvd., Farrell, PA 16121.
Calling hours will be from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Monday, March 18, 2019, in Our Lady of Fatima Church, Farrell.
Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be 1 p.m. Monday, in the church, with Rev. Michael G. DeMartinis, nephew, as celebrant.
Interment: St. Anthony's cemetery, Hermitage.
