Ann Varvarich, formerly of Farrell, passed away peacefully at 3:10 a.m. Sunday, March 22, 2015, in St. Paul's, West Salem Township. She was 91. Miss Varvarich was born May 22, 1923, in New Alexandria, Pa. Her parents, George and Mary Ratvay Varvarich, emigrated from Europe and eventually established roots in Farrell, where Ann had made her home for the past 85 years. Ann attended Farrell schools and graduated from Farrell High School in 1941. She stayed in close contact with many of her classmates by attending monthly reunions at local restaurants. Upon graduation, Ann went to work for the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp. and retired after 40 years of service. A devout Orthodox Christian, Ann was an active member of St. John's Orthodox Church, Hermitage, where she was a member of ACRY for many years and enjoyed bowling in the church league. She helped out at the church whenever she could and spent many hours in the church kitchen making pierogis. "Aunt Ann" was a quiet and gentle lady with a great disposition and a generous heart. She was a wonderful aunt, great-aunt and great-great-aunt and will be sadly missed by her 25 nieces and nephews. She never missed a holiday, birthday, anniversary, wedding or graduation and sent cards and well wishes on every occasion. She adored her home in Farrell and was very content to pass the time with friends in the living room or on the front porch. She always enjoyed watching the Pittsburgh and Cleveland professional sports teams on TV. An excellent cook, she mastered many of her mother's ethnic recipes and always will be remembered for her delicious mashed potatoes and homemade soup. Besides her nieces and nephews, Ann leaves two sisters, Mary Bouchere, Akron, Ohio; and Margaret Sirb, Hermitage. She was preceded in death by her parents. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to St. John's Orthodox Church, 3180 Morefield Road; or Buhl Park, 715 Hazen Road, both Hermitage, PA 16148. Calling hours: 9 a.m. to time of service Saturday (3-28-15) in St. John's Orthodox Church, Hermitage. Service: Funeral service at 11 a.m. Saturday in the church with the Rev. David Mastroberte, pastor, officiating. Interment: St. John's Cemetery, Hermitage. Arrangements by J. BRADLEY McGONIGLE FUNERAL HOME Inc., 1090 E. State St. Sharon.
