A funeral service will be held Wednesday for Angelina Arena, O'Brien Memorial Health Care Center Windsor House, Masury, formerly of Norris Street, Sharon. She passed away peacefully of natural causes at 10:55 p.m. Friday (6-10-11) in the care center. She was 83.
Mrs. Arena was born May 17, 1928, in Gioiosa Ionica, Calabria, Italy, a daughter of Raffaele and Teresa Lombardi Napoli.
She was educated in Italy and immigrated to the United States in 1947 following World War II. She settled in Farrell where she studied language classes at Farrell High School.
She was a member of Our Lady of Fatima-St. Ann Church, Farrell.
In 1947, she and her husband established the Wave Restaurant in Sharon, and it became one of the city's cornerstone restaurants. She was in charge of the kitchen for decades and mentored many a young person as everyone came to call her 'Mama Ange.' She was the typical Italian mother who would always find something to feed whoever walked through the doors. She inspired the ever-popular Wave spaghetti sauce. Mama Ange retired in the mid-1990s to devote more time to her beloved grandchildren.
Her husband Domenic Arena, whom she married in 1947, passed away Feb. 26, 1990.
She leaves her three sons, Salvatore (Sam), Ralph Anthony, and Robert Louis Arena, all Sharon; a brother Santo (Sam) Napoli and his wife Frances, Brookfield; a brother-in-law, Rocco Arena, Farrell; a sister-in-law, Roseanna Arena, Farrell; and her beloved five grandchildren, Victoria Arena, Las Vegas; Domenic Arena, Sharon; Emily and Sarah Arena, West Middlesex; and Hallie Arena, Pittsburgh; and two great-grandchildren, Derek and Levi Arena.
Contributions may be made to the funeral home to help defray funeral expenses.
Calling hours: 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday (6-14-11) and 10:30 a.m. to time of service Wednesday (6-15-11) in J. BRADLEY McGONIGLE FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATORY Inc., 1090 E. State St., Sharon. A Rosary will be recited at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday.
