Dr. Amanto P. D'Amore, Brookfield, Ohio passed away peacefully Thursday (2-25-10) in O'Brien's Memorial Nursing Home, Masury, Ohio with his family at his bedside. He was 100.
Dr. D'Amore was born October 15, 1909 in Introdacqua, Italy the oldest son of the late Domenico and Maria Concetta DiBenedetto D'Amore.
Along with his family, he moved to Youngstown, Ohio in 1919, attended the former Rayen High School and was a member of the first graduating class of East High School in 1927. Dr. D'Amore received his B.S. and medical degree in 1933 from Ohio State University College of Medicine, Columbus, Ohio.
He was a member of the ROTC, the Pershing Rifle Corp. and was awarded a Varsity letter in fencing while attending Ohio State. From 1933 to 1934 he interned at Providence Hospital, Detroit, MI.
Dr. D'Amore began his medical practice on August 15, 1934 in a small office at the corner of Elm St. and Miller St., Masury, Ohio. He later moved his office to the corner of First St. and Miller St. in Masury where he practiced most of his 61 years in medicine until retiring on August 15, 1995.
During WW II his private practice was interrupted when he was called to active duty on April 1, 1941. He served as a Captain with the US Army Medical Corps for nearly five years in the South Pacific and was honorably discharged on February 15, 1946.
Dr. D'Amore was on staff at Sharon Regional Health System and was the Brookfield School District physician for 40 years. He was named a Fellow, American Academy of Family Physicians in Los Angeles, CA on October 15, 1974. He was the first medical director at John XXIII Home, Hermitage, where he served on their board of directors for ten years. Dr. D'Amore was a founding father and charter member of St. Bernadette's Church, Masury. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, Masury, and the Optimist Club in Brookfield for many years.
Surviving are: his wife of 58 years, the former Florence Shutrump, whom he married May 5, 1951 in St. Joseph's Church, Youngstown, Ohio; four daughters, Claudine Ugran (Joseph), Austintown, Ohio; Denice Fogle (Thomas), Grove City, Ohio; Mary Lou Mikolay (Joseph), Canfield, Ohio; and Laura Miklos (John), Sharon, PA; four sons, David D'Amore, M.D. (Debbi), Brookfield; Randy D'Amore (Deirdre), Farmington Hills, MI; Loren D'Amore (Lisa), Masury; and Donald D'Amore (Michelle), North Olmsted, Ohio; 21 grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Dr. D'Amore was preceded in death by his two brothers, Col. Adanto D'Amore, M.D. and Arcangelo D'Amore, M.D.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to St. Bernadette's Church, 7800 Locust St. , Masury, Ohio 44438 or to a charity of the donor's choice.
