Obituary

Alyse Diane Barr, 71, of Youngstown, OH, passed away Friday evening, November 1, 2024, in her residence at Heritage Manor.

Ms. Barr was born on January 2, 1953, in Sharon, a daughter of the late Harold and Shirley (Epstein) Barr. She attended Sharon schools and graduated with honors in 1970. Later, she attended the University of Cincinnati, Westminster College, and Penn State University - Shenango Valley Campus, again graduating with honors.

Alyse lived and worked in the banking industry in Cleveland, later transferred to New Castle, and ultimately worked in Sharon. As her health deteriorated, she moved to Levy Gardens and Heritage Manor, Youngstown, where she resided at the time of her death.

She had a passion for foreign languages and at one time could speak French, Spanish and conversational Hebrew.

Her Jewish faith, upbringing, culture, and cuisine were very important to her. She attended Temple Beth Israel religious school where she was confirmed at its former Sharon location, and honored to be chosen to read the Torah portion for her confirmation service. Alyse was also a 50-year member of TBI now Congregation Ohev Beth Sholom and was recently honored for that milestone.

Alyse loved music, especially Whitney Houston, Barbara Streisand, and Motown musicians to which she loved to dance. In her younger years, she enjoyed listening and singing along to the music of Carole King and James Taylor.

She is survived by a brother, Michael Barr and his wife Nancy, Hermitage; nephews and nieces all of whom she took keen interest, Adam Barr and his wife Ashley, Irwin, PA, Benjamin Barr and his wife Jill, Chicago, ILL, and Jonathan, Alayana and Amanda Bartko, all of Cleveland; her paternal aunt, Alice Goldblatt, Milwaukee, WI, whom she was especially close; along with many special cousins throughout the United States; and a dear friend, Jennifer Kowalski Painter, Meadville, PA.

In addition to her parents, Alyse was preceded in death by her maternal grandmother, Eva Epstein, whom she was especially close.

The family would like to thank the staff and caregivers at Jewish Family and Community Services, Levy Gardens, and Heritage Manor, including: Ken Bielecki, Lynne Azar, Eric Murray, Shane Baldwin, and Nick Hargate for their exceptional care and understanding as Alyse's health declined.

The family would also like to express their gratitude to the staff and caregivers at SouthernCare Hospice, along with Rabbi Courtney Berman of Congregation Ohev Beth Sholom, who were especially comforting to her during her final days and hours.
