Mass of Christian burial will be Tuesday for Alice E. Katakowski, Hermitage, who passed away unexpectedly at 1:45 a.m. Thursday, May 21, 2015, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. She was 72. Alice was born May 28, 1942, in Sharon, a daughter of Anthony J. and Mary Lamb Krutsch. A lifelong area resident, she graduated from Sharon High School in 1960. In her younger years, she worked as an office manager at the former Valley View Department Store, Brookfield. She also worked as a secretary for the United States Army Corps of Engineers at the Shenango Dam. Alice once co-owned a ladies dress shop called the Empress Room in Hermitage. She retired from Macy's in the Shenango Valley Mall, Hermitage, in 2013. She was a member of St. Stanislaus-Holy Trinity Church, Sharon. In her spare time, she loved to read, play cards, tend to her flower gardens and, at one time, she enjoyed bowling. Her husband Joseph J. Katakowski, whom she married May 18, 1968, passed away March 18, 1999. She is survived by two sons, Bryan J. Katakowski, at home; and Christopher J. Katakowski, Hermitage; Jaclyn Scilla, whom she loved like a daughter; two sisters, Mary M. Schmidt and her husband John P., Brookfield; and Loretta J. Krutsch, Sharon; one brother, Anton J. Krutsch and his wife Patricia, Mount Vernon, Ohio; a brother-in-law Gene Katakowski, Farrell; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she also was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Theresa Basile.
