Obituary

Alfonso "Al" J. Mazanek, 98, a former longtime resident of Hermitage, passed away peacefully Saturday evening, May 3, 2025, in Carmel, IN.

Mr. Mazanek was born October 30, 1926, in East Vandergrift, PA, a son of the late John and Mary (Olszewski) Mazanek. He graduated from Vandergrift High School and later earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Villanova University (PA). While at Villanova, Alfonso was on a Naval ROTC Scholarship and continued to serve with the Navy Reserves.

Al worked as an electrical engineer at the former Sharon Transformer Div. of the Westinghouse Electric Corp. for nearly 40 years.

He was a parishioner of the Church of Notre Dame in Hermitage from its founding and all five of his children attended Notre Dame Parochial Grade School. He was an active member, serving as a lector and Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist – also administering the Eucharist to shut-ins and those in nursing homes.

Al was a Godly man and remembered by all as kind, faithful, generous, and good-natured. He wished everyone, friend and stranger, a "magnificent" day. Al liked to brighten everyone's day and even the taciturn smiled at his greeting.

His beloved wife of 71 years, Irene (Paczak) Mazanek, whom he married May 1, 1954, survives at their home in Carmel, IN.

Al is also survived by five children, Lisa Schell (John), Mark Mazanek (Betty Anne), Greg Mazanek (Rose-Ann), Matt Mazanek (Kathy), and Melanie Klim (Wayne); 14 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren (and counting).

In addition to his parents, Al was preceded in death by his brother, Ray Mazanek.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be directed to the Church of Notre Dame, 2325 Highland Rd., Hermitage, PA 16148.
